Understanding industrial change. Informing strategic decisions.
MS VECTOR is a UK-based independent advisory connecting industrial technology, markets and business strategy. We help business leaders and organisations understand industry change, assess opportunities and risks, and identify practical directions for growth, investment and market development.
Discuss a strategic question →These questions arise when entering a new industry, reviewing a business portfolio, considering an acquisition or investment, or seeking new applications for existing technology. The starting point is the decision — not a predetermined report.
Markets and industries do not change in isolation.
Technology changes. Society changes. Regulation, demand, skills, supply chains and the way people live and work change too.
These developments are often considered separately. In practice, one change can alter the meaning of another. A shift in society can create a new need. A new need can give an existing technology a different purpose. A change in technology can reshape an industry, while a capability developed in one market may become relevant in another.
Opportunity often emerges between these changes.
Our approach is to look beyond the immediate market or question, understand what is changing around it, and consider how those changes connect. The aim is not to predict the future, but to see the context more clearly and identify what may be worth exploring next.

Engagements are scoped to the decision: from a focused strategic assessment to a broader growth or market-development project. Our role is independent industrial and commercial insight, not regulated financial or legal advice.
Understand the wider context, the changes taking place and the factors that may affect the decision.
Separate the important questions from the background noise and clarify where attention should be directed.
Connect markets, technologies, companies, people or organisations when the opportunity depends on more than one part.
Move from analysis and discussion towards market activity, partnerships, introductions or other practical actions.
Selected assignments illustrate work ranging from industry transformation and corporate growth strategy to international market development and long-term commercial support. Descriptions are limited to the work undertaken; they do not imply adoption of recommendations or investment outcomes.
Group-wide growth strategy examining industrial inkjet opportunities, existing technology and commercial strengths, organisational alignment and potential new applications.
Assessment of structural change in textile manufacturing, digital microfactories and emerging business models, including the potential role of a global technology group in enabling the transition.
Worked with Japanese companies considering establishing operations in the UK, beginning with the requirements of each company and considering how these could fit with the industrial and regional strengths of the West Midlands.
The work included considering suitable routes and locations for entry, and connecting companies with the organisations and resources needed to establish operations in the UK. Collaboration with the British Embassy in Japan formed part of this work.
What began as market development developed into an eleven-year relationship, working alongside the company as its international market, customer base, commercial organisation and technical support capability developed.
The relationship illustrates a form of work that can continue beyond the initial market question as the needs of the business change.
MS VECTOR is a UK-based independent advisory working across strategy, market development and partnerships, with particular depth in industrial technology and international markets.
It is led by Sam Kawai, originally from Japan and based in the UK since 1997. His work has developed across Japan, the UK and Europe over many years, and more recently India.
Earlier work in the UK included inward investment and regional development, supporting Japanese companies considering establishing operations in the country. This meant understanding the requirements of individual companies, considering suitable routes and locations for investment, and connecting them with the organisations and resources needed to establish their operations.
Sam later led the European business for a Japanese technology company. Since then, his work has continued to involve international market development, partnerships and the development of new applications and business opportunities for technology companies. This has included work in industrial inkjet and digital manufacturing.
Over the same period, the context around business has continued to change: technology, society, demographics, skills, demand, regulation, supply chains and the way people live and work. These changes do not affect every organisation in the same way, but they increasingly shape the questions companies and other organisations need to consider about markets, investment, technology and future direction.
This is the thinking behind MS VECTOR: look beyond the immediate question, understand the wider context, identify how different changes may connect, and then consider what can be done in practice.
Some questions begin with a clear objective. Others begin with a possibility that is not yet fully defined.
If you are assessing an unfamiliar industrial technology, exploring a growth opportunity, reviewing a market or considering a strategic decision, we can discuss the question, the evidence required and an appropriate scope of work.
